Why Your Car’s Camera Needs Recalibration After a Windshield Replacement
The forward-facing camera on most vehicles built after 2016 is mounted directly to the windshield or in a bracket attached to the windshield glass. When the windshield is replaced, even a fraction of a millimetre difference in glass thickness or mount position shifts the camera’s field of view. Left uncalibrated, your lane departure system may read lanes incorrectly, your automatic emergency braking may react too early or too late, and your adaptive cruise control may behave erratically.
This is not optional on ADAS-equipped vehicles. It’s a safety requirement. Skipping recalibration after windshield replacement on a vehicle with Toyota Safety Sense, Subaru EyeSight, Honda Sensing, Ford Co-Pilot360, or any similar system is genuinely dangerous. We perform recalibration in-house — it’s part of the job, documented in the insurance claim, and covered under most Texas comprehensive policies at no additional out-of-pocket cost.
Static vs Dynamic ADAS Recalibration — What’s the Difference?
Static Recalibration
Done in a controlled environment using a calibration target board placed at a specific distance in front of the vehicle. The camera calibrates against the target without the car moving. Required for Subaru EyeSight, Tesla Autopilot, and many European vehicles. Takes 30–60 minutes. We have the equipment to perform this at your location — flat ground with sufficient clear space in front of the vehicle is needed.
Dynamic Recalibration
Done while driving the vehicle at a set speed on roads with clear lane markings. The camera self-calibrates using real-world lane data. Used for Toyota Safety Sense, Honda Sensing, and many Ford systems. Takes 15–30 minutes of driving on suitable roads — we handle this as part of the job after installation in Leander, typically on Ronald Reagan Boulevard or US-183 where lane markings are clear and consistent.
Does Insurance Cover ADAS Recalibration in Texas?
Yes — in most cases, for most Texas comprehensive policies. When windshield replacement requires ADAS recalibration, it’s documented as a necessary part of the glass claim — not a separate mechanical repair. State Farm, USAA, Allstate, Geico, Farmers, and Progressive all have policies that cover recalibration as part of a glass claim on ADAS-equipped vehicles. The recalibration cost ($250–$500 cash value) is included in the claim documentation we prepare and submit on your behalf. Most Leander drivers pay $0 for the complete job including recalibration.
Which vehicles need ADAS recalibration after windshield replacement in Texas?
Any vehicle with a forward-facing camera for safety systems needs recalibration after windshield replacement. This includes: all Subaru models with EyeSight (2013+), all Tesla models, Toyota vehicles with Toyota Safety Sense (2017+), Honda/Acura with Honda Sensing (2016+), Ford vehicles with Co-Pilot360 (2018+), Volvo with City Safety, Mazda i-Activsense, and most Audi, BMW, and Mercedes models with driver assistance packages. If you’re unsure, tell us your year, make, and model — we’ll confirm on the call.
Can I drive my car immediately after ADAS recalibration?
After static recalibration — yes, once the recalibration process confirms successful completion. After dynamic recalibration — the process is performed while driving, so you’re on the road throughout. In both cases, we confirm the system is reading correctly before we leave. The urethane adhesive on the windshield installation also needs its cure time — we give you the safe drive-away time (typically 60 minutes with fast-cure adhesive) before the recalibration drive.
